This project
Standalone Legacy Systems
- SmartBorder’s clients used multiple standalone systems, updated annually to meet new logistics and compliance regulations, leading to inefficient workflows.
Manual Processes
- Back-office tasks, like manually entering faxed customer information into the systems, slowed down operations and hurt efficiency.
Slow Development Speed
- Maintaining legacy systems while meeting growing demands for updates was hard. They needed a faster, cost-effective path from proof of concept to market.
Technical Debt
- Frequent changes to meet new requirements delayed bug fixes, leading to operational disruptions and reduced productivity.
High Local Hiring Costs
- It was hard and costly to find skilled developers in Buffalo, often requiring recruitment from more expensive markets like New York and Boston.
Our goal was to unify SmartBorder’s international commerce legacy systems into a single, modern web platform while maintaining the old systems during the transition. We began by analyzing the hierarchies and dependencies of the legacy systems to ensure they were properly respected in the new platform’s architecture and development.
Working closely with the SmartBorder tech team, we built the front-end using the latest Angular technologies, incorporating their code and requesting regular updates to stay on track.
We identified recurring patterns, documented redundancies, and created a process to streamline future projects. We created a custom front-end code generator that reduced production time from 4 days to just 10 minutes.
Once several legacy systems were integrated into the platform, we shifted to backend development. Our UX team ensured the software was user-friendly and cohesive.
We also assisted SmartBorder in migrating from their old source control system to GIT, improving release management and version control, and providing documentation for a smooth transition.
SmartBorder continues to invest in the platform’s growth, and we remain engaged, developing front-end enhancements, redesigns, and performing back-end maintenance.
